Assisting victims of disasters
If you make a donation and want to claim a tax deduction, it’s important to note the following - the donation must be made to an organisation that is a deductible gift recipient (DGR) or to an organisation that is authorised by a DGR to collect on its behalf, for example a bank. DGRs often conduct appeals for particular disasters. An example is the Australian Red Cross which has a Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 fund to assist victims of that disaster.
